How interior design markup works

Most interior designers price FF&E on a cost-plus basis: you buy at trade (cost) price and charge the client your cost plus a markup, commonly 20–35%. Freight and sales tax are added on top, and the difference between what you pay and what the client pays is your gross margin on the item.

The catch is that this only works if your numbers stay current. The moment a vendor raises a price and your schedule doesn't update, your markup silently shrinks. That's why a live budget matters more than the exact percentage you choose.
